A TUD commended research project by Falk Schneemann for a vertical railway. The Transferium is an interchange located at the intersection of magnetic levitation rail, railway, highway and local traffic networks and is sited at the border between the historic and new quarter of Utrecht. Although the Transferium is designed for this specific site it can be seen as an urban prototype, configurable to other location and transfer modes. In the Transferium, excessive consumption of valuable urban realty is avoided by the spatial economics: the station is organized vertically with stacked railway platforms interwoven by traffic carriageways. This results in an urban footprint 50% smaller than that of a traditional station with a similar platform number. The higher construction cost being offset by the released land income potential.
